For the first method, in Excel select the range of cell and copy to the clipboard. In Autocad paste from the clipboard. The OLE link should update automatically when changing the source file. If using a data link, in Autocad start the DATALINK command. Click on the start a new data link button, and browse to your excel sheet. The link displayed in Excel may appear differently depending on how the workbook was opened. The link may appear to match either the root UNC share or the root drive letter that was used to open the file. Scenarios that may cause links to not work as expected. When you export it to PDF by clicking Export - As PDF, the hyperlink in the report does not work. If you run the report in IE and Firefox the same way, the hyperlink in the PDF report works fine. That is most likely because the default is set to Chrome's built-in PDF Reader. You can disable the Chrome PDF Reader. The folder also contains an Excel workbook which has hyperlinks to the audio and picture files. Everything works from my various Windows computers. But when I open the workbook in Excel on my iPad the links do not work. Is there something I can do to make the link works.

The other day I needed to create a PDF file. I had written my latest e-book on Secrets of Successful Blogging in MS Word. This ebook contains a lot of very useful links for the reader. Before publishing it, I wanted to convert this MS Word ebook in PDF format. There are several methods available for such a conversion. Now even MS Word has built-in support for PDF printing. So, it should not have been difficult at all for me. But I created the PDF file using a third party plugin of MS Word. PDF file was all fine but a strange problem crept in. Hyperlinks given in the MS Word document were not working in the newly created PDF.

Links (both web URLs and email address links) in PDF were formatted in blue color and underline (the way they were in MS Word) but they were not clickable. It was important for me to make these links in PDF work. So, I asked Google and did a bit of research on it.

I found that this problem was faced by many people. In several forums plugins and online PDF services were suggested as the solution of this problem.

I tried installing a few plugins in MS Word 2007 to be able to print PDF with clickable links. These plugin included word2pdf free version. I also tried online PDF services like pdfonline but no luck! Links in the PDF file still refused to work.

I also tried standalone software like CutePDF, but still, links did not work!

However, thankfully, soon I found a solution!

If links are not working in your PDF, you should use the Export feature of MS Word 2013 or Save As feature of MS Word 2007. When I exported my ebook as a PDF, I found that all the links in PDF were intact and clickable.

Go to File menu and then select Export To option. Then click PDF or XPS. Save the file.

Go to Office Orb button in top-left corner and then select Save As option. Then click PDF or XPS. Save the file.

The message from this small tip is that, you do not need any third-party plugin or online PDF creator to print the PDF file. Just use built-in facility in MS Word and links in PDF will work without any problem.

If you have a document that you created with any version lower than 2007, you can always find a machine with 2007 or 2013 and get a PDF file with perfectly working links.

Depending on the tools you use to create content, you might be accustomed to slick ways to insert hyperlinks in your document.

In Google Docs or Word, for example, just typing a hyperlink and finishing with a space automatically creates a hyperlink. It’s a sticky hyperlink, too – it moves around as you add or remove content above and below it. Easy, right?

It takes a little more work to add a clickable link to a PDF but don’t worry – in this article we’ll explain how you can easily insert hyperlinks in PDF documents.

Adding hyperlinks to a PDF

Before you start adding hyperlinks, you need to understand something about hyperlinks in PDFs. Many document formats (HTML, Word, Google Docs, etc.) associate a hyperlink with a text string.

PDFs work differently: a hyperlink in a PDF has nothing to do with the underlying text. Instead, a hyperlink in a PDF is a pre-defined clickable area on a page. Think of it as an invisible square box. When a user hovers their cursor over this space, their cursor changes, indicating it’s clickable.

This leads to two important lessons about hyperlinking in PDFs:

  • Readers won’t know that there’s a hyperlink unless there’s a visual indicator (think underlining and blue text) or if they happen to move their mouse over the area.
  • Editing the text in your PDF will cause the text you hyperlinked to shift position – but the clickable area won’t shift. Your PDF hyperlink could end up on a blank spot on the page. That means that whenever you move text in your PDF, you need to move the hyperlink area to the right place.

It also means that, in most cases, adding a hyperlink to a PDF involves two stages. Formatting the text to look like a hyperlink, and then adding a hyperlink area. It’s easy with Foxit PhantomPDF.

Let’s look at the first step – changing the text so it’s clearly identifiable as a hyperlink.

  1. Select the text you want to hyperlink
  2. Click the ‘Edit Text’ button that’s near the top-center of the screen.
  3. Change the color of the text to blue
  4. Tap the “underline” button to make the text look like a hyperlink

OK, so you’ve made it clear to your user that they can click on a hyperlink. Now, just add the hyperlink itself.

1. Under Edit, click the Link button

2. Next, draw a square around the text you want to hyperlink, like this:

4. Type in or paste the web address you want to link to and click OK.

That’s it! You’ve inserted a hyperlink in your PDF.
